Get

tours led by expert professional guides: “The City and the Sea”,
“A Stroll through the Fishermen’s Quarter of Santa Creu”,
“EL Call Major' and “The Convent of the Capuchins of Palma”
(a visit to the cloistered convent of Capuchin nuns).
Modernism was a revolutionary cultural and artistic
phenomenon which left its mark on Europe during the transition between
the 19th and 20th centuries, and had a broad-reaching influence on architecture
and the decorative arts.
This guided tour will enable you to discover the influence of modernism
on the city of Palma through the buildings erected as a consequence
of this innovative aesthetic spirit, buildings that brought a colourist
note to the imposing austerity of the mansions in the historic city
centre.
The introduction of Modernism into Mallorca was due to the presence
of representative figures of Catalan modernism, such as Antonio Gaudí
i Cornet and Lluís Domènec i Montaner, amongst others, who travelled
to the island for commissioned works. Most modernist works were carried
out through private initiative, with the impulse of the new Mallorcan
bourgeoisie, who became wealthy through commerce, industry and emigration
at the beginning of the 20th century. The generation of local architects,
like Gaspar Bennàssar , Francesc Roca, Jaume Alenyar, Guillem Reynés
etc., adopted the new style leaving their stamp on a group of buildings
destined to social and private life and the world of commerce and industry.
